Add President Vladimir “Vlad the Lad,” “Rootin’ Tootin’” Putin and (now former) Communications Director Anthony “the Mooch” Scaramucci to the long list of those who banked on President Donald J. Trump to be something other than he is.
What he is is a narcissist, and the first rule of dealing with a narcissist is that you cannot bank on anything. That’s because the narcissist must always be right. But no one is always right. So in order to maintain perfection, the context has to change. The circumstances and others must be wrong.
Let’s take the easier of the two latest examples of the dismissed, dissed and disenchanted first. The Mooch offered a mirror of the boss – brash, vulgar and arrogant. Rule No. 2 of dealing with a narcissist: Never try to outshine or mimic him or her. Instead of bashing Steve Bannon, the Mooch should’ve observed how Bannon has faded into the background and done likewise. By trying to out-Trump Trumpet, the Mooch set himself up as a rival star while at the same time mirroring the absurdity and lack of class and uniqueness in the boss’ behavior. He had to go, even if the martinet new Chief of Staff John F. Kelly hadn’t insisted on it. And I’m sure he insisted on it.
Putin’s situation is a little more complex. As in other bromances, he misjudged what his BFF could deliver. He thought Trump could lift the sanctions against Russia. He never factored in Congress digging in its heels. Putin has still driven a wedge in the American electorate and between it and the rest of the world. But in a world where cash is king, Putin, who could use the liquidity the lifting of sanctions would’ve provided, has got to be disappointed.
So Vladdie expels 755 American diplos from Russia, including from country estates that look like ranch houses in the States, so no great loss there.
Meanwhile, Trumpet has taken to imposing sanctions on another country heard from, Venezuela, citing President Nicolás Maduro’s “sham” elections and dictatorial manner.
Rule No. 3 of dealing with a narcissist: Just as they have no boundaries, they have no self-awareness.
It’s always a case of the Keurig calling the Nespresso black.
