Well, it’s official: President Donald J. Trump, who knows a thing or two about divorce, and New York are splitsville. The grounds? Apparently, extreme mental cruelty. New York was mean to him, don’t you know, forcing him to pay huge, huge, city and state taxes, investigating him and his cronies. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

You have to hand it to President Donald J. Trump. He really knows how to commemorate an occasion with a bang. On the anniversary of the Haitian earthquake and Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Trumpet decided to let the world know that people are not to be judged by what King called “the content of their character” but by what one witty Washington Post poster called “their country of origin.”

Trump apparently told Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Durbin – who thought they were at the White House to negotiate the bipartisan immigration “bill of love” that “Apprentice” Trump spoke of Tuesday when he was trying to disprove the lunatic persona portrayed in Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury” – that we don’t need people from Haiti, El Salvador and “s---hole” countries in Africa. No, what we need is immigrants from places like Norway. ...

Charlottesville and the ‘bigotry’ against hate

The racial clashes that led to the death of three people, including two state troopers, in Charlottesville, Va. may seem complex but they’re actually sickeningly, frighteningly clear.

The white supremacists, protesting the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, were loaded for bear with torches, Confederate and Nazi flags and shields, evoking the Ku Klux Klan, a terrifying image from my childhood. They were met by counter-protestors, who carried the day – until a car plowed into them, killing a 32-year-old woman and injuring 19. In all, 35 were injured. (The troopers were killed when their surveilling helicopter crashed.)

President Donald J. Trump initially took to his favorite medium, Twitter, to condemn the violence, then expanded on the theme at a veterans’ event at his Bedminster, N.J. golf club, denouncing “hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.” ...
